The author of the tape Mykhailo Uhman is a military journalist, writer and volunteer.
The film "The Path of Generations" (2021) is about the struggle of the UPA in the Second World War and the struggle of the Ukrainian Armed Forces against the Russian invaders today.
The director came up with the idea for the film in 2018, when Mykhailo, during a visit to Volyn, met Hanna Abramchuk (call sign "Zelena"), the former liaison of the legendary UPA-North commander Klym Savur. Abramchuk spoke about the fulfillment of her special task when her neighbor turned her in to the Russian secret police. Abramchuk, 16 years old at the time, was tortured, raped and eventually sent to the Gulag. Another hero of the film, whose real-life experience inspired the creation of the film, is Stepan Petrash, a UPA soldier who survived ten years of imprisonment in a camp in northern Russia after being captured by the Russians. Petrash told how the UPA fought against the German and Soviet invaders.
The plot of the film moves from the last century to the present, when Ukrainians again face the enemy in the war for their survival. The young Ukrainian Nazar, whose ancestors fought in the UPA, decides that this is not his war and stays at home while others go to the front. But during a walk through the forest, Nazar stays overnight near one of the graves of a fallen UPA fighter. The fighter visits Nazar in his dream and argues with him about his decision not to defend his country. After talking with the rebel, the main character quits his job, abandons his pregnant girlfriend and goes to war, because he understands that if the Russians are not driven out of Ukraine, his unborn child will have no future.
Well-known Ukrainian actors - Larisa Rusnak, Volodymyr Nikolayenko, Oleksiy Palamarenko, Nazar Borushok, as well as real Ukrainian special servicemen, special forces fighters and soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine took part in the filming.
Some scenes of the film were shot in Volyn, where the opposition to the UPA was born, others were shot in Donbas near the town of Volnovakha, which was destroyed by the Russian army.
Authenticity was important to the creators, so the film used real battle tactics and weapons that Ukrainian troops used against the Russians.
The film will be shown in Ukrainian with English subtitles.
